This large, beautifully preserved North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) has an adorable expression and a pose that makes him look as though he’s reaching out for a hug. It’s a sweet invitation—but trust us, this is one cuddle you’ll want to admire from a safe distance!
Mounted on a wooden base, this eye-catching piece makes a wonderful addition to a taxidermy collection, natural history display, curiosity cabinet, or Dark Academia-inspired space. His expressive face and distinctive quills make him a memorable conversation piece for collectors and lovers of unusual natural history specimens.
Mount Details
- Species: North American Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum)
- Display: Standing taxidermy mount
- Base: Wooden base
- Approximate Dimensions: 20" × 14" × 12"
- Item Reference: BR110
Condition Disclosure
While packing this porcupine, I noticed a small amount of blue paint on the tips of several quills. It appears he may have brushed against a freshly painted blue fence post at some point in his past!
The paint is not noticeable when he is standing upright on his base, but it can be seen when the mount is turned onto its side. I wanted to disclose this detail so the buyer knows exactly what to expect. Please review the photos carefully.
Handling Note
Those quills are sharp, so please handle with care! If you need to move the mount, avoid pressing against the quills and take care to protect your hands. This is definitely a display piece to admire rather than a porcupine to cuddle!
Species & Fun Facts
The North American porcupine, also known as the Canadian porcupine, is a large rodent native to North America. It belongs to the New World porcupine family and is the continent’s second-largest rodent, after the North American beaver.
A few fascinating facts about these prickly creatures:
- Baby porcupines are called porcupettes. They are generally born in spring or early summer.
- Usually one baby at a time: A typical litter consists of a single porcupette, while twins are uncommon.
- A lengthy wait: Gestation lasts approximately 205–217 days.
- Quite the courtship: During breeding season in fall and early winter, porcupines use vocalizations and courtship behaviors to attract a mate. The male may also shower the female with urine during courtship!
Nature certainly has a few surprises up its sleeve.
