IMPORTANT: SHIPPING & DISPLAY REQUIREMENTS (PLEASE READ)
To comply with shipping regulations and ensure a safe, affordable journey, this specimen is shipped WITHOUT a jar and WITHOUT preservation fluid.
• Choosing Your Jar: You will need to provide your own display container. Because of the specimen's unique size, we highly recommend taking it with you when shopping for a jar to ensure the opening and depth are a perfect fit. Craft stores like Hobby Lobby offer a massive selection of suitable glassware.
• Rehydrating/Filing: Once you have your jar, place the specimen inside and completely submerge it in 70% Isopropyl Alcohol. You can easily find this fluid at any local grocery store, pharmacy, or dollar store (like Family Dollar or Dollar General) for around $2.
SPECIES BACKGROUND & FUN FACTS
The domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica) is derived from the rock dove and holds the prestigious title of the world's oldest domesticated bird. Their close relationship with humans dates back over 5,000 years—as recorded on Mesopotamian cuneiform tablets and Egyptian hieroglyphics—with some research suggesting domestication began up to 10,000 years ago.
Beyond their ancient roots, pigeons have made historic contributions as wartime heroes. Thanks to their unmatched homing abilities, "war pigeons" served as vital messengers during major conflicts, saving thousands of human lives. Several pigeons have even been highly decorated for bravery under fire, including Cher Ami (awarded the French Croix de Guerre) and G.I. Joe and Paddy (recipients of the Dickin Medal).
Own a beautiful piece of natural history and a tribute to one of humanity's oldest avian companions.
